My experience with Charlie Johnson Fitness
This is the story about my experience with coach Charlie Johnson, CJ Coaching and his program
I've been on my fitness journey for 7+ years now. I would say I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to weight lifting and nutrition. So I don't NEED to hire a coach per se. But I've found that being on a fitness program helps me massively in actually staying on the path, as it keeps me accountable to someone. I've always done better when I have others' expectations weighing on me.

I decided to document my experience with various fitness coaches while at it, and help people out, in order to help people choose the top coaches, and avoid anyone that people should stay away from, as the fitness industry can be ripe with such individuals.

That said, my experience on Charlie's 3 month program has been nothing but positive. I'll go through step-by-step what my experience was with Charlie Johnson Fitness. See my review below...

1. The Free Strategy Call

Charlie was accepting some applications for his Men's Health program. I'd heard of it before, so though it would be a good opportunity to sign up. I dropped him a message, and he was very responsive. I decided to jump on a call with the CJ Coaching Head Strategy Coach a couple of days after.

What happened here is basically we covered my own fitness journey's history, what I'd tried, what worked, what didn't work, my goals, etc. (I'd just come off of a bulk, and wanted to lean down, while keeping my muscle mass). Eventually we came up with a solid action plan.

I was skeptical at first, but once having been on the call, I understood the guy knew his shit. So I decided to sign up for a 3 month program with Charlie himself. I was introduced to the other coaches as well, all of which seemed well qualified and capable in their own right (some of them seemed to have their own specialties), but I thought that if I'm going to invest, and bother making a review, I might as well go with the man himself.

2. The Program Set Up

This is the part where many coaching programs end up failing, or putting their money where their mouth is. I've been through 6 other coaches, and half of them I didn't hear back from at all in the first few days, leaving me wondering if I got scammed, or if it was all marketing, and no service.

For Charlie Johnson Fitness, I was quite pleased from the get-go. Pretty much immediately after signing up, I got an email with everything I needed to get things going. All very clear, no information overload, just straight to the point, A, B ,C. The first and most important part for Charlie was the Onboarding Questionnaire. Which makes sense. I've joined programs without this, in which you end up with a cookie-cutter plan. That definitely wasn't the case here. It took me a while initially to complete it, as he requested a lot of detail. Once I sent it through, I was informed we'd be good to get rocking within 48 hours.

I asked if I could delay it a bit as I wanted to plan my groceries once I was ready, and that was no issue.

What I really enjoyed about this from the beginning was his Elite Facebook group. I got introduced to everyone doing the program alongside me, and made a couple of solid guys and gals that I'm still in touch with today, with similar mindsets and love for fitness.

I received my plans the next day, all customised according to my current physique, and the foods I like, dislike, and what my goals were, on the CJ Coaching App. I'll go into it later in more detail. Charlie incorporates his carb-cycling technique into the plans, which makes them a lot more enjoyable to follow. He later on teaches in-depth how to manage your macros, and essentially eat whatever you like, so long as it's within the macros, and get the same results. I knew a lot of this from my experience before hand from my years of experience, but there were quite a few nuances which were interesting to learn. The level of education I got I'd probably rate the highest from all of the coaches I've worked with.

The workouts were awesome. I've got my own equipment at home, and it was fully customised based on what I had. The weekly volume was manageable, and I even got made some additional plans for when I travel (I'm on the road quite a lot).

3. The Charlie Johnson Fitness program "CJ Coaching" App

I haven't got much to write here other than it's a breath of fresh air to have a minimalistic app that just does what you need. In the past I've used apps that have way too many features, and try to be a jack of all trades, but it ends up being confusing. I've continued using this app after the program as it's pretty neat.

It tracks your workouts, tracks your meals and macros, and has an entire library of exercises with form videos from Charlie. Also habit tracking. Easy peasy.

4. The Program Itself

Charlie dropped me a message in the chat straight away, after getting my plans. He covered my initial questions straight away, and the rest on the onboarding call, where we covered any other questions. Very smooth process.

Every week I would check in, and update my progress, which Charlie would review and make any adjustments to my caloric intake/workouts as necessary. I should also add that he would always get back to me within 24 hours on days that weren't my check in day, which I was pleasantly surprised with.

There's also 2 group calls a week, which are led by either Charlie or one of the Elite coaches. They covered a wide range of topics, some at beginner level, and some more in depth - I would say always communicated in a very understandable fashion, which made it easy to digest. Once a month they had a psychology coach on, to talk about mindset, and staying on track psychologically. That's something else I hadn't seen done before anywhere!

Three weeks in, you get an accountability call, which serves to keep you on track, and, well, accountable. With everything I was getting I would say there was no need for me to do this, although I can see how this would hit the nail on the head for anyone that struggles.

Overall I dropped a solid 22lbs over the 3 month program, and got in solid lean shape! They hold professional photoshoots every quarter as part of the program, photos edited and all. Unfortunately I couldn't make this one due to travel, but they invited me to join the next one free of charge, which I'll definitely be joining!

5. Conclusion

In a sea of coaches and fitness programs, I can happily and confidently say Charlie and his Charlie Johnson Fitness program stands out above the ones I've tried so far. I've got another couple that I want to try to write reviews about, but I've already reserved my spot with Charlie for next year, as I've enjoyed this very much. I'd 100% recommend this to anyone with a bad experience with online coaching, or anyone looking to just get started!

I haven't tried the women's program (obviously) but you can apply for that one here.
